Spice honey simple syrup

Spice syrups made out of honey are delicious to add to coffee drinks, tea, and cocktails.  They add punch and flavor, and they are so easy to customize to your preferences or recipe.

There are two methods below: whole and ground spices.  The whole spices take a bit more effort but eliminate the grainy feeling of spices floating around in a drink.  However, if you don’t have access to whole spices, or are short on time, the ground method works well, too.

WHOLE SPICE SYRUP

INGREDIENTS

¼ cup whole spices
1 cup water
½ cup honey

INSTRUCTIONS

Crush the spices with a mallet or spatula. Add the water and spices to a small saucepan.  Bring to gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer slowly until the water evaporates to ½ cup.  Remove from heat, add honey, and stir until dissolved.  Cool the mixture until room temperature.  Strain the syrup through a sieve to remove all the spices.  Store in refrigerator.

GROUND SPICE SYRUP

INGREDIENTS

½ cup hot water
½ cup honey
1 tablespoon ground spices

INSTRUCTIONS

Combine the honey and hot water and stir until the honey is dissolved.  Add the ground spices and stire until mixed thoroughly. Cool the mixture to room temperature.  Store in refrigerator.
